Light has the power to transform spaces, create specific atmospheres, and enhance our sense of well-being. For Jiří Krišica, the chief designer at Elite Bohemia, light serves as a bridge connecting people to nature. His latest creation, the Iceberg lighting fixture, exemplifies modern lighting design by combining artistic value with a tribute to the beauty and fragility of the natural world.
In crafting the Iceberg lighting fixture, Jiří drew inspiration from the majestic icebergs that calve from the Antarctic coast and drift through the ocean. His fascination with these colossal masses, many of which remain concealed beneath the water, sparked the idea of capturing their stunning beauty in a crystal light fixture. “Glaciers symbolize change and transience. They are impressive yet fragile, much like our environment,” Jiří explains.
Crystal was the natural choice for this design, thanks to its transparency and light-refracting qualities that mimic the effect of ice crystals. Working closely with skilled glassblowers, Jiří focused on recreating the textures of glaciers on a smaller scale. “Creating the illusion of frozen water in crystal presented a technological challenge that required both precision and creativity,” he adds.
The journey to develop the Iceberg lighting fixture was fraught with challenges. Translating an idea from paper to a tangible object using such a demanding material as glass required innovation and skill. The primary hurdle was to replicate the intricate textures of ice patterns. This complex production process involved heating and manipulating glass threads to achieve the desired effects.
“It felt like coordinating an orchestra, where each part must play its role perfectly,” Jiří reflects. As the team leader, he embraced the challenge, continuously generating new ideas to enhance the design. The final result is a lighting fixture that not only beautifies interiors but also interacts dynamically with the surrounding space, casting intriguing plays of light and shadow reminiscent of shimmering ice.
The Iceberg lighting fixture transcends mere aesthetic appeal; Jiří envisions it as a reminder of the beauty of nature and the importance of protecting it. “I want people to appreciate the wonderful environment around them and take steps to care for it,” he emphasizes.
Looking ahead, Jiří believes that lighting design will always balance functionality and aesthetics. As technology evolves, designers must integrate new elements while staying true to timeless principles.
If the Iceberg lighting fixture could speak, it would share a tale of passion for perfection and the pursuit of beauty in every detail. “My work is successful when it brings joy to people. When it enhances their day, that’s the greatest reward for me,” Jiří shares.
The Iceberg lighting fixture stands not just as a work of art but as a silent witness to our ever-changing world. It serves as a gentle reminder that, even amid rapid change, we can find moments of tranquility and beauty—just like pausing to admire icebergs drifting in the ocean.
